- J.B. Duke created a pleasing environment of seemingly natural vistas at Duke Farms. Patterned after his native North Carolina, he transformed the mostly flat farmland into a spectacular park. Pumping millions of gallons of water from the Raritan River, J.B. Duke created a water system that incorporated seven lakes, six waterfalls and 35 fountains. At the time it was built, many commentators heralded Duke Farms as a masterpiece in the age of magnificent estates. Like many successful early-20th-century capitalists, J.B. Duke spent an enormous sum creating his estate. He insisted on using the most advanced technology of the time and the best European craftsmen. As a result, Duke Farms offers on of the best examples of a man-made lake system in the United States. The design of Duke Farms reflects J.B. Duke’s interests in farming, landscaping, horticulture and above all, water.
