June 12, 2011 — Schools

Dear William (and Daniel, Catherine, Michael & Baby Girl Y) (and your parents), (and any future descendants and their parents),

Good morning Prince William,

Last night, Babcia Krysia and I went to Alina’s Graduation Party. Alina graduated from Gerorgetown University (Bachelor of Arts, with majors in psychology and studio art (concentration in painting)), and intends to go on with her education at the University of Indianapolis, where she plans to complete their Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program (M.A. and then Psy.D. [Doctor of Psychology]). Wow! So much education — but, education is good for you, and it is good for your friends and family.

I like school — I was born in Argentina, and I attended the Manuel Belgrano public grammar school in Ramos Mejia (a suburb of Buenos Aires). My parents brought me to the United States when I was ten years old, and I continued my education at Our Lady of the Angelus Catholic grammar school (September 1958 to June 1963) in Rego Park, New York. This is a picture of my grammar school:

After grammar school, I attended Mater Christi Catholic Diocesan High School (September 1963 to June 1967) in Astoria, New York. The school was an hour away from my home in Forest Hills, New York, and I traveled by subway. I liked high school — I was a photographer for the school newspaper; I was on the track team for a very short time; also for a short time, I was in the school orchestra (I tried to play the tuba); I was on the junior varsity tennis team; and I was the President of the Physics Club.

While in high school, I was trying to figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up — I thought of becoming a priest (my Mom wanted to be a nun when she was young); I thought of becoming a surgeon (my Mom went to medical school); I thought of becoming an engineer (my Dad was a Civil Engineer — I thought of becoming an Electrical Engineer); but ultimately, I decided to study business — everyone told me that I was good at it.

In high school I did many exciting things; but the greatest event in my life while in high school was meeting your Babcia Krysia. At first, she was just one of my Sister Olenka’s friends from Polish Scouts — but eventually I fell in love with her, and decided to marry her; more about this at another time.

After high school, to study business administration, I went to the Bernard M. Baruch School of Business Administration (September 1967 to May 1971), which was part of the City University of New York. This is a picture of Baruch College:

When I first started College, I decided to study Economics, and even hoped to get a Ph.D. in Economics — BUT, then I got a bad grade in one of my Economics courses; and I knew that that was the end of my Economics career. Then, I reviewed what courses I had taken, and what I liked, and decided to declare my major to be Finance. That was a good move! I graduated with a Batchelor of Business Administration in Finance.

While in College, I joined the Army ROTC program that was offered at my school. When I graduated College, I was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve — I was assigned to the Infantry. I will tell you more about my military career (short as it was) at another time.

When I finished College, I decided to continue my education — I applied (and was accepted) into the evening Masters of Business Administration program at Baruch College in Finance (September 1971 to May 1975). It was here that I learned a bit about computers — I learned to program in Fortran (a computer language). Because of my education and my computer experience, I eventually landed a job at Kuhn Loeb & Co., a very prestigious Investment Banking firm on Wall Street. This was my business card:

Then, when I was promoted to an Assistant Vice President, I got a new business card:

After many years in finance, I decided to study the Law. I was accepted into the evening program at Seton Hall Law School in Newark, New Jersey. I finished in three and a half years, and I received a Juris Doctor degree, Cum Laude (that means with good grades). Since then, I have been attending seminars on a regular basis, to keep up with new ideas in my field.

You know, William — when I started to write this Post to you, I intended to tell you about Family Trees; somehow, I got distracted. I will have to tell you about Family Trees at another time.

Now, it is time for me to make some coffee for your Babcia Krysia (I enjoy it also, but not as much as she does) — be good; and I will talk to you later.

Love,

Dziadziuś Paweł.
