2019-11-28: Thanksgiving:
- Dear Alina I was born in Poland it is my country. In 1939 Poland was invaded by Germany. At that time all bad things happened. We were taken from our home by occupying Germans for slave-labor to Germany. It was difficult time hard work and no hope. After the war ended we were liberated by the America Army. We had to stay in displaced persons camp (D.P.) for 5-years waiting for immigration. We had a choice to go home or to immigrate to other places. We chose U.S.A. I came to America with my mother in the year 1950, by ship from Germany. It was a long journey (12-days on the sea) seing only water. You can imagine how glad I was when finally land and the Statue of Liberty apear. I still remember the excitement in that moment. We all rushed to take some picture. We had dreams about this land of opportunity and we were very excited to be here. After the inspection we … [were] released. We were peniles, so somebody had to … [help] us. We went to my friend house in Brooklyn
- There we stayed for 2-weeks, until I earned some money. I started to work right away in a factory. My first check was $28.00 dollars for 40-hours of work. Not much, but it was the begining. We found a apartment bought some food, learned how to shop and start our new life. Not everything was easy. There was the language barier. I already learned some English in Germany but it was not enough. I felt strange among people when they spoke and I couldnt understand. In the factory I didn’t like what I had to do over and over the same monotonious things. I begin to feel sad. I had so little money couldn’t see or go places because everything was too expensive. So this was hard. I was always looking for a better place to work. Intime I impoove my language and became a citizen of U.S.A. Went to school in the evenings t learn something. I like to … [do] Fashion Design become my carier. I mewt my husband, got married, had four chi… [children] and life began to get bettwr. I always thank God for the opporunity
- to be in this wonderfull country. This is a sotry of my life, but it is also part of Your History. Thank you for letting me share this with you. I hope that you have a very bright and happy future. Your Babcia Irena
